Electrolysis is the process of separating the elements of a molecule, typically H2O in the classroom setting, by applying a direct current to force a chemical reaction. The Hoffman Electrolysis apparatus is a robust system for performing this process in the classroom or lab. An H-shaped piece of glass with two graduated tubes (up to 60ml at intervals of 0.2ml) on either side is attached to a central funnel. The tops of the H-glass are sealed with ground-glass stopcocks, and the bottoms are capped with platinum electrodes. Replacement electrodes for this device are also sold (Platinum Electrodes #501-2 and Carbon Electrodes #4-50104).
