This apparatus is an effective tool for demonstrating the coefficient of expansion of metals. It comes with rods of the following materials for you to test: copper, brass, aluminum, and steel. To demonstrate linear expansion, place a rod inside of the apparatus’s tube that has both an inlet and outlet for steam. Once heated inside the tube, you can compare the expanded length of the rod to its original length and note using a thermometer the temperature difference before and after the rod expands. The extent of the rod's expansion is measured in micrometers.
